Because the chair in question is just the first of many vivid scenes that spill out of Brother Trucker's third CD, the deceptively titled "Something Simple." Singer, guitarist and primary songwriter Andy Fleming always has had a sharp eye for what makes the common Joe and Jane tick. Now he has developed an ear that hears exactly how his lyrics can best settle into each song's groove and showcase the riffs from childhood pal and lead guitarist Mike Fitzpatrick. That chair is the first image in the opening song, "Side By Side," quickly followed by a cooler swarming with fruit flies, dirty socks, muddy boots, a damaged screen door, etc. By the end of the song, the middle-aged married couple at the center of Fleming's miniature drama have come brilliantly to life, and it's impossible not to have Fitzpatrick's licks running through your head. Fleming's vocals and rhythm guitar are accompanied by Mike Fitzpatrick on lead, John Conlan on drums and Lyle Kevin Hogue on bass. This formerly out of print debut album from 2000 has been described as a heady mix of roots country and western pop with influences of Springsteen, Steve Earle, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young.

Brother Trucker CD discography This unpretentious, easy-going CD reminded me of an album I reviewed last year by Eric Straumanis called Thunder and the Plains. This is in part because both recordings share a Bruce Springsteen-Steve Earle-Tom Petty point of view but it's also due to the fact that they're both on Trailer Records. The opening Brother Trucker track, "Bought & Sold," has a very nifty verse: "Empty cans and Winston butts lay crushed around the car/As they left for the 7-11/Two burritos and a six pack and it's back in the car/As they try to chase down 1987."
