Rebel Woman CD (2008)
Chiwoniso music CDs With a good ten-year gap between her debut and sophomore releases, Chiwoniso (daughter of the great Dumisani Maraire) had plenty of time to develop her sound for Rebel Woman, and indeed she did. The stylings mirror her own travels, with elements of traditional African music, bits of British R&B, and a bit of modern African sound in the vein of a Johnny Clegg. The music is anchored ...

Ancient Voices CD (2000)
Chiwoniso discography African-American R&B has been an influence all over the African continent. From Miriam Makeba in South Africa to the late Fela Kuti in Nigeria, the popular artists of Black Africa have found a variety of ways to incorporate R&B elements. Tamba CD (2010)
Chiwoniso albums Alto saxophonist Max Wild has not so much hit on a formulaic brand of Afro-beat songs as he is exploring different ways to phrase them. Hovering on the edge without teetering over the brink, Wild's angular and tart sweet horn is the foundation for his bandmates to scurry around, combining contemporary jazz with village tribal and joy-filled dance music not too far removed from Nigerian highlife -- think King Sunny Ade meets ...

African Voices Anthology CD (2012)
Chiwoniso music CDs Lusafrica's modern African music compilation series continues with the singer-centric African Voices Anthology, following its debut volume African Guitars Anthology. The collection digs into the label's catalog to take a lyrical tour of the continent, touching on beloved contemporary vocalists from Algeria (evocatively rhythmic gnawa singer and poetess Hasna el Becharia) and Gabon (protest singer turned musical giant Pierre Akendengué) to South Africa (sunny township harmonizers Mahotella Queens) and Cape Verde (gorgeously melancholy morna mama Cesária Évora) and destinations in between. African Voices Anthology also acknowledges the next generation with some selections featuring rising star singers, like Chad's elegant voice of societal observations, Mounira Mitchala, and Reunion Island-based Creole and chanson synthesist Nathalie Natiembé.
