Five Special songs Ron Banks (of the Dramatics) produced Five Special, a five-man group featuring his younger brother Bryan. The two groups are vastly different; Five Special is more laid-back and jazzy than the Dramatics. Bryan sings in a light, wafer-thin falsetto that's pretty to hear but lacks bite and fire. Special Edition is like a Chinese meal; you enjoy it while it's playing, but it fails to satisfy, and you're starving for sounds again in an hour. That said, "Jam," "Heaven You Are to Me," "Do Something Special for Your Lady," and "Why Not Be Mine for a While" are all arresting concoctions, good late-night music that would have been more compelling with Ron Banks on lead. The group's deep bass singer and expressive tenor are excellent and should have been featured more. ~ Andrew Hamilton Personnel: Dennis Harris , T.J. Tindall, Darnell Kimborough (guitar); Eli Fontaine (saxophone); Carlton "Cotton" Kent, Mark Johnson , Raymond Johnson (keyboards); Bernie Worrell (synthesizer); Jerry Jones (drums); Carl "Butch" Small (percussion). Audio Mixer: Rick Gianatos.

Five Special CD discography This is the first of three albums the group recorded. While most of the songs are attractively arranged and written with buoyant melodies, they seem to deviate from that joyous feeling initially conveyed. On some of the tracks, Bryan Banks' lead vocals are inconsistent, with the exceptions being "Why Leave Us Alone" and ...

Five Special CD discography One look at Journey into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story will incite skepticism from many longtime disco collectors. How can the Warner-distributed Rhino justify a title so definitive when the compilation is so heavily weighted toward Warner-distributed material? (Levan did happen to remix and play a lot of Warner-distributed singles.) Why are Patrice Rushen's "Haven't You Heard," Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime," and Phreek's "Weekend" -- three Warner-distributed tracks played by Levan -- included ...
