Jann Parker songs Jann Parker has redefined the term "singer", calling to it all of the exclusivity and distinctive character that belonged to it when applied to Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson. A beautiful voice, range and control are all Jann Parker. But these qualities are only the prerequisite beginnings of any good singer. In the development and perfection of her own personal style, Jann Parker has acquired the distinctive signature of a great vocalist. She is tremendously impressive in her ability to take songs such as God Bless The Child and Stormy Weather and make them her own. It is not an easy thing to do. But Jann Parker sings them, recalling Billie and Lena, for whom those songs are most noted, only in how deliciously different her own arrangements are from theirs. Jann Parker is professional in the best sense. As a performer, she is warm, confident, relaxed and always in control. These are qualities that allow her the freedom to deviate from the rehearsed arrangement of a song mid-chorus, and impulsively follow a line leading to the development of refreshing new variations on the original theme. And the results of these explorations are sometimes humorous as well as musically exciting. The musical rapport that exists between Ms. Parker and pianist Aaron Graves is magical. As her accompanist and music director, he joins forces with Mark Gross on alto sax, Marcus McLaurine on bass and George Gray on drums conjuring up a virtual tempest of sound around her or one as subtle as a breeze, but always creating the perfect musical environment. Hearing Jann Parker sing never fails to uplift the spirit, put a grin on your face and ...

Imbued with Memories Imbued with Memories CD (2008)
CD $16.29 Buy It  Details
Jann Parker CD discography Chip Shelton has long been a very talented and fluent flutist whose music straddles the boundary lines between straight-ahead jazz, soul-jazz and R&B. Imbued with Memories differs from most of his previous recordings in that the music was recorded in the studio rather than live in concert; it puts the emphasis on Shelton's regularly working group and, in addition to his playing on flute and piccolo, Shelton is also occasionally heard on a pair of his antique instruments: a tenor and a soprano sax, both of which are pitched to the key of C (rather than B flat). Otherwise, the music is typical of a Chip Shelton recording. It always grooves, even on "It Don't Mean a Thing." Among the more intriguing selections are a funky rendition of Joe Henderson's "Recordame," an R&B-ish vocal tribute (with Jann Parker) to Martin Luther King ("MLK"), and Shelton's mournful C-tenor on "Tsunami After-Prayer." Guitarist Lou Volpe takes honors among the supporting cast. Recommended to lovers of funky jazz. ~ Scott Yanow Personnel: Chip Shelton (vocals, flute, piccolo, saxophone); Jann Parker (vocals); Lou Volpe (guitar); Nate Shaw (piano, electric piano, organ); Marcus McLaurine (bass instrument, electric bass); Dwayne Cook (drums, percussion); George Gray (drums); Steve Kroon (percussion). Recording information: Knoop Studios, River Edge, NJ (10/15/2007-10/21/2007).
