Brother Oswald albums The term legend is tossed around quite a bit. But what qualifies one more than 38 years with Roy Acuff and the Grand Ole Opry? Oswald didn't just help develop the dobro sound, he is a master picker, and this set finds him in great form. Covering Hank Williams and Bob Wills, he also throws in a few nice originals for a swell batch of twang. ~ Tim Sheridan Personnel: Brother Oswald (guitar, banjo, dobro); Onie Wheeler (vocals, harmonica); Charlie Collins (guitar, mandolin, background vocals); Buck White (mandolin, piano); Sam Bush (fiddle); Lightnin' Chance, Joe Zinkan (bass). Brother Oswald music CDs Pete "Bashful Brother Oswald" Kirby joined Roy Acuff's Smoky Mountain Boys in January of 1939. His dobro playing and comedic persona were staples of both Acuff's band and the Grand Ole Opry. On this solo outing from 1972, Brother Oswald's comedic persona is nowhere to be found, it's just his first-rate dobro mastery on favorites including "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," "Wabash Cannonball," and "Tennessee Waltz." While this Rounder disc is highly recommended for fans, the novice may want to check out his classic recordings with Acuff before venturing here. ~ Al Campbell Includes liner notes by Charles Wolfe. Personnel includes: "Bashful" Brother Oswald (dobro); Norman Blake (guitar, dobro, mandolin); Charlie Collins (guitar); Tut Taylor (dobro, mandolin).
