Sam Bates CD discography For his approach, smooth jazz guitarist Ronny Smith synthesizes the classic jazz sounds of past six-strings George Benson and Wes Montgomery, the Latin rhythms of Poncho Sanchez and Tito Puente, and the decades-spanning funky pop of Stevie Wonder. With all this in the mix, Smith achieves an almost ideal balance of light n' breezy ambiance, deep grooves, and jazz roots. (The closer is a classic tune by the late legendary bebop trumpeter Kenny Dorham.) Horns, keyboards, and even a little gospel-flavored organ enrich the palette he draws upon.
This energetic new CD release aptly sums up this self- proclaimed smooth jazz guitarist and songwriter. Although his love for rhythmic grooves is primarily what drives the compositions on his project, one cannot help but hear fragments of Wes Montgomery and George Benson within the fluid melodies. "Just Groovin" captures the spicy flavor of each composition while maintaining the individual sound carefully crafted from Ronny's imaginative spirit. With four previous CDs under his belt including, "Long Time Comin'," "Laid Back," "Got Groove" and "Simply Stated," this new release reveals a satisfying and unique approach to his compositional style.
