As Long as the Grass Shall Grow CD (1968)
Peter La Farge CD discography Surprisingly, this collection of songs about what we now call Native Americans does not include LaFarge's best-known song, "The Ballad of Ira Hayes." But the singer/songwriter, who was a Native American himself, still manages to turn in one of the most thorough and moving examinations of the sorry history of White deception and aggression ever recorded. He gives his songs a dramatic, near-spoken delivery, making the ...

Peter La Farge on the Warpath/As Long As the Grass Shall Grow CD (1992)
Peter La Farge albums Peter La Farge on the Warpath and As Long As the Grass Shall Grow are Peter La Farge's two best-realized albums. Combined here on one CD, there are 26 songs with a final spoken invocation. The best material is from On the Warpath, La Farge's last album, including "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" and the chilling "Crimson Parson" (about Col. Chivington and the Sand Creek massacre), are most effective, but the material off of the other record, including the wider-ranging "Alaska" and "Tecumseh," is well worth hearing. La Farge's spare approach to his music can make these 26 songs somewhat difficult to take in one sitting, but it is a perspective on topical songwriting that few people presented and is worth hearing on that basis alone, to see what even some of the hardcore folkies found too rich for their blood. ~ Bruce Eder

Song of the Cowboys/Iron Mountain & Other Songs CD (1992)
These two albums, originally released by Folkways, fit well together as collections of cowboy songs and more personal songs of the West. Unfortunately, Songs of the Cowboys, which makes up the majority of the material here, isn't nearly as interesting as his two albums devoted ...
