Ganglians songs In the two years between their 2009 album Monster Head Room and Still Living, Sacramento's Ganglians signed to Lefse Records, leaving behind the dingy cobwebs of Woodsist's roster and attempting to take their music into sunnier pastures. With a running time of just under an hour, the album stays true to the psychedelic flavor of their early tracks, but the group enlists Dirty Projectors producer Robby Moncrieff to beef up the music. Despite sounding more like a product of the studio than of the bedroom, Ganglians remain fundamentally themselves on Still Living -- they still have lo-fi merits, and are drenched in gallons of chamber reverb. However, the songs are more melodic and nuanced than any of their previous albums, and they discover many moods within their washed-out sound. Conceived as a double LP, the first six songs are traditional lo-fi pop -- in the style of Kurt Vile or Panda Bear -- and the second six are more adventurous, jumping around aimlessly from the strange and icy "Things to Know" and "The Toad" to the indie-style garage rock of "Good Times" and "Faster." Ryan Grubbs has blossomed into a confident vocalist, and the other bandmembers (Kyle Hoover, Alex Sowles, and Adrian Comenzind) have made serious progress as well. From the performances, to the songwriting, to the production, Still Living is the group's strongest, most multi-dimensional album. ~ Jason Lymangrover Audio Mixers: Robby Moncrieff; Ryan Grubbs. Monster Head Room Monster Head Room CD (2009)

Ganglians CD discography By most reasonable standards, Ganglians' full-length debut, Monster Head Room, would qualify as lo-fi. Compared to their self-titled EP released just a few months earlier, though, Monster Head Room is a veritable pocket symphony. The Sacramento quartet's falsetto harmonies are no longer obscured by distortion, merely blurred, and float between semi-funky moments that recall the post- SMiLE Beach Boys. Like a more sprawl-conscious Olivia Tremor Control, Ganglians use delighted Brian Wilson tricks -- in both arrangement and fey/naïve demeanor -- to stake their claim firmly in a lineage of home-recording psychedelic popsters. They repeat the EP's two best songs, "Radically Inept Candy Girl" and "The Void," in new recordings. The former's discombobulated arrangement receives a radical unmuddling, the toy piano and odd breaks coming to the fore. "The Void" benefits from a slower tempo and some occasionally forced atmospherics, such as a choir of shouting voices. Throughout, Monster Head Room strives for anthemic moments. On "To June," the band drops some willfully naïve moon/June/spoon rhymes, but the melody is winning enough that it ...

Ganglians Biography

Ganglians CD discography Falling somewhere between the noise-pop of bands like Wavves and Woods and the blissed-out psychedelia of the Beach Boys, Sacramento, California's Artist spent much of 2008 recording. Their debut single, a limited-edition split 7" with Eat Skull, appeared January 2009. The band's tours and releases came quickly after that, with an appearance at that year's South by Southwest festival and a self-titled EP and a full-length album, Monster Head Room, arriving on Woodsist. Where Artist was abrasive and self-recorded, Monster Head Room was cleaner and trippy at the same time. After a 7" on Captured Tracks, Artist signed with Lefse Records, and in 2011, they released Still Living. ~ Heather Phares
