Revocation CD discography The eponymous fourth long-player from Boston-based progressive/technical death metal outfit Revocation arrives two years after 2011's critically acclaimed Chaos of Forms, which found the quartet earning comparisons to metal institutions like Pantera and Tool and current decibel-crushing provocateurs like Converge, Mastodon, and Goatwhore. Preceded by the album's first singles, "The Hive" and "Invidious," the Relapse Records-issued Revocation debuted in the Top 200, landing at the number four spot on the Heatseekers chart. Lyricist: David Davidson . Personnel: Dan Gargiulo, David Davidson (vocals, guitar); Phil Dubois-Coyne (drums).

Revocation albums Every few years, a young metal band comes along and, without cutting ties to the genre's storied past, totally rips up the landscape and rebuilds the music in its own image. The lineage runs through Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Mastodon, Lamb of God, arguably Trivium...and now, Revocation are one of those bands, an American group coming out swinging with an album that demands respect, as well as furious headbanging. Existence Is Futile isn't the group's debut; they self-released the almost as awesome Empire of the Obscene in 2008. But as most headbangers' first taste of this Boston act, it's destined to be an underground legend and, if Revocation choose the right package tours, could vault them into the big leagues in a hurry. They've got a classicism to their galloping, thrashy riffs and fleet, fluid guitar solos that recalls Lamb of God, but there are hookier melodies here, plus some surprisingly heavy, hardcore-derived gang shouts on some songs, and a bass break and dissonant riff toward the end of "Leviathan Awaits" that demonstrates an awareness of technical and progressive death metal, too. Their vocals are hoarse and guttural, while still recognizable as a human voice, something that will help keep them out of the death metal ghetto. Perhaps the most astonishing thing about Revocation, though, is that they're a trio. The complex guitar-bass interplay would seem to imply, even require, two guitarists, but there's just one guy up there, and he's singing, too. From the opening instrumental fanfare "Enter the Hall" to the seven-minute album closer, "The Tragedy of Modern Ages," this is one of the best pure metal albums of 2009. ~ Phil Freeman Personnel: David Davidson (vocals, guitar). Revocation music CDs As well as wowing metalheads everywhere with an impressive sophomore album in 2009's Existence Is Futile, Revocation also inspired many pundits to predict that they had "next big thing" potential written all over them. Indeed, the Boston outfit's uncanny knack for welding wanton fury to blistering technique was nothing short of dazzling, but then, similar prophecies have been made about bands as diverse as Mastodon and Trivium, and look at the backlash unleashed, for reasons both obvious and mysterious, toward the latter. No one should saddle Revocation with a similarly sour curse, however, especially since their third opus, 2011's Chaos of Forms, hardly swan dives off the cliff of commercial intentions as the band attempts to evolve its sound. No, no, instead the overall mission statement here is very much in line with the preceding LP's über creative and hyper technical death/thrash, augmented with discreet melodic increments, bigger grooves...more diversity, basically. On the one hand, this approach opens up more avenues for Revocation to explore, allowing songs like "Dissolution Ritual," "Conjuring the Cataclysm," and title cut to dip ...
