With the cooperation of Steve Reich, Eno, and Louis Andressen, it endeavors to explain the complex contemporary music picture of the past 30 years, as well as showing how ideas move back and forth between continents. The performance was accompanied by Frank Scheffer's digitally shot images of Schiphol Airport on a large overhead screen. Also included is the documentary In the Ocean directed by Scheffer. A definitive precursor of later ambient music, this four-part instrumental piece is devoid of all but the most basic aspects of song and, therefore, challenges listeners to re-imagine what music might be. Also included here is the documentary IN THE OCEAN, featuring appearances by Steve Reich, Brian Eno, Louis Andriessen, and Bang on a Can.
During the 1999 Holland Festival, the New York group Bang on a Can performed their new instrumental version of Brian Eno's composition of this 70s work. But the New York-based Bang on a Can ensemble proves otherwise in this 1999 performance. As easy to listen to as it is ignore, the piece hardly seems as though it would benefit from being played by live musicians. Before the term "ambient" came to be applied to everything from the eerie soundscapes of the Aphex Twin to such hybrids as ambient-techno and "illbient," there was Brian Eno's MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS. Bang on a Can performs. Scheffer explores the relationship between American and European composers and how they view and influence each other.
