Even in fits of brevity, like the under-four-minute "II," there are several dramatic movements, with an emphasis on the escalating conflict between Andrew Tweedy and Emmanuel Sayer's guitars, and punctuated by the death-metal march of Mike Godbout's drums. It's a recipe that is becoming quite common in the early 21st century, and Ottawa, Canada's Buried Inside certainly embrace this approach, as heard throughout their 2009 offering, Spoils of Failure. In that spirit, its eight tracks are typically several minutes long, and cryptically titled with Roman numerals. Anchored by Nick Shaw's desperate scream but kept afloat through an atmospheric avalanche of progressive metalcore, SPOILS OF FAILURE is a worthy continuation of the heady head-banging introduced by bands like Isis. As far as modern-day doom metal goes, Spoils of Failure certainly proves that Buried Inside has the genre figured out. Audio Remasterer: Alan Douches. But if you're feeling down in the dumps and feel like staying there a big longer, Buried Inside can certainly lend a hand -- just check out any of the album's eight ditties (all of which go by roman numerals -- who needs songtitles?).
