On "GMF" the group combines a driving, Strokes-like groove and melody with Supertramp/10cc-style Rhodes keyboards and harmony vocals, while the quirky "Concrete" sounds like the Kinks jamming with `80s art-rockers Sparks. The boy can't be 30 yet, and even though his band lost their major-label deal just before they were about to start recording their second album, it's hard to imagine that he's got too many things to complain about. Personnel: Brian "Blister Fingers" Carter (guitar); Jim Hoke (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Deanna Varagona (baritone saxophone). When Features' singer and main songwriter Matt Pelham laments "the things we wish we'd done, when we were young" on "The Temporary Blues" it's hard to resist the temptation to crack wise. Like their successful contemporaries Kings of Leon, the Features play gritty, punk-ish rock & roll and pop music, but with a heavy dollop of soul that belies their Southern upbringing.
