Its homage is updated with splashes of electronica which serve to sweeten the monolithic arrangements, and, on songs like "He's a Deep Deep Lake," the band's roots reach all the way back to Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd. The band manages to find its own niche among its contemporaries: more evocative than the National, less bleak than Editors, and not nearly as melodramatic as Interpol, Artist's music is actually more varied than that of their peers, even though they're drawing from the same pool of influences. Since the release of Artist's 2001 album A Brilliant Career, post-punk-inspired indie rock bands have gone from being hip to common, and it would be easy to write off the band's second, self-titled album as riding the wake of the trend. Singer-guitarist Krayg Burton's fey vocals conjure both Robert Smith and Ian McCulloch in a good way, while the ambient textures of the instrumental "Garrison" place the band firmly in the 21st century, and the five-plus minutes of the album-closing "Like You Know" display a mature, sweeping musical vision. Recalling staples of early-1980s British alternative pop like Echo and the Bunnymen, San Francisco quintet Artist's full-length debut is heavy on effects-laden guitar and Cure-style melodic bass. However, Artist is a strong album that deserves more than being written off as just the work of post-punk wannabes.
