Kaddisfly: Christopher Ruff (vocals, piano); Aaron William Tollefson (guitar). Highlights include the mischievously shifting rhythms of "Empire" and the climactic "Campfire." On their second album, Oregon based Kaddisfly continue to develop a sound that is big, rich and texturally varied, full of gorgeous multi-layered guitars and genuinely attractive vocals. Unfortunately, these elements are counterbalanced by song structures that sound increasingly disjointed and haphazard rather than thoughtfully complex, and lyrics that are obviously trying for poetic depth but achieve only embarrassing (sometimes really embarrassing) pretentiousness. A concept album of sorts, SET SAIL THE PRAIRIE is built around a 12-month journey around the world, with each song inspired by a different country. The Portland emo quartet's second album smoothes out its artier edges, replacing the band's more experimental tendencies with an accessible sound that consolidates its lyrical and musical strengths.
