| Switched Subject To Change CD (2002) Parental Advisory
$11.16 As a result, tunes like "Dead Fingers" devolve into uninspiring formula. Unless the band follows the advice of their album title, they will perhaps be forever more suited to the soundtrack of an aggressive video game than the collection of a discerning metal enthusiast. The band's musical dexterity and enthusiasm are notable and show promise for future endeavors, but don't quite make up for the obvious lack of fresh ideas at this time. Personnel: Ben Schigel (vocals); Bradley Kochmit (guitar). ~ JoE Silva Nu-metal hopefuls Switched (spelled in the gimmicky manner Sw1tched as often as not on the band's website and other official material) came out of a surprisingly fertile Cleveland scene that also brought listeners Mushroomhead and Chimaira. The single and lead track, "Inside" encapsulates much if not all of what follows: pitched-down guttural vocals, pounding and pedestrian bass and drum lines, and a semi-catchy chorus decent enough to have netted them bottom billing during Ozzfest 2002. ~ Brian O'Neill The debut disc from Cleveland's Switched is slick MTV-styled nouveau metal, awash with the standard sort of grim adolescent lyrical stresses, and intense volume over innovation. Switched: Ben Schigel (vocals, percussion); Joe Schigel, Brad Kochmit (guitar); Jason French, Shawn May (bass); Chad Szeliga (drums). This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Howard Benson's production work alongside Tom Baker's mastering, however, is the sort of spot-on effort that makes Switched appear considerably more viable. Audio Mixers: Chris Lord-Alge; Toby Wright. The single and lead track, "Inside," encapsulates much if not all of what follows: pitched-down guttural vocals, pounding and pedestrian bass and drum lines, and a semi-catchy chorus decent enough to have netted them bottom billing during Ozzfest 2002. Songwriters Ben Schigel and Bradley Kochmit continue to tap right into the heart of their genre with tracks like "Four Walls" and "Reflection," but they are never able to crest the clichés that they have mastered. The debut disc from Cleveland's Switched is slick MTV-styled nouveau metal, awash with the standard sort of grim adolescent lyrical stresses, and intense volume over innovation. Subject to Change, the debut disc following an inexpensive teaser of live cuts and one non-album track called Spread Your E.P., has the requisite energetic riffing, screamed vocals, and cathartic takes on life the genre demands, but little here helps the band stand out from a very crowded pack of similar artists.
