And while Toth's solo work can be tentative, the straightforward and strong arrangements here greatly benefit his slightly skewed yet standard folk tales of sin and redemption. And while Wooden Wand's new backing outfit, the Sky High Band, seem to be there for moral support only (a nice shuffling beat here and there, and traces of organ or pedal steel), the group's testifying backing vocals offer a gentle boost to Toth's simple vocal/guitar sermons. Here the main reference is the Woody Guthrie/Bob Dylan lineage of agit-prop lament and dustbowl blooz. Unless you know Toth's solo work you'd never suspect he has such a traditional folkie in him. James Toth (aka Wooden Wand) tempers his free-form tribal Americana for a more straightforward set of raw, shuffling acoustic jams on 2006's SECOND ATTENTION. Wooden Wand's (aka James Toth) collaboration with the Sky High Band is such a far cry from his work with the Vanishing Voice it's like night and day (although, according to one feature, the Sky High Band is "a mish-mash of Skygreen Leopards and Vanishing Voice). For those who have taken a shine to the more outre aspects of Toth's fractured vision, fear not: the album still has plenty of neo-hippie weirdness, particularly in Toth's lyrics, which are laced with heavy doses of off-kilter Christian imagery.
