On their 2006 release, Cosmos, it sounded as if the lads in Zombi were obsessed with Moving Pictures/Signals-era Rush. However, Zombi remains a 100-percent instrumental affair, so any chance of this slightly more traditional approach to synth rock crossing over to the masses seems pretty far out of reach. On SPIRIT ANIMAL, Pittsburgh instrumental duo Zombi moves away from the dark, '70s horror flick background music that inspired its name into warmer, more cosmic (space, heaven, etc.) territory. Which isn't to say that this is pop music; it's just that whereas previously Zombi's analog soundscapes evoked images of armies of undead taking over the planet, SPIRIT ANIMAL conjures space sequences from low budget science fiction movies. Recording information: El Studio II, Pittsburgh, PA (01/2008-06/2008); Nightmare City Studios, Nyack, NY (01/2008-06/2008). Personnel: Steve Moore (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, bass guitar); A.E. Paterra (synthesizer, drums). One obvious difference between the group's last two releases is that on Spirit, the duo has now introduced guitar to their synth-heavy sound (without introducing a third member however -- bassist/synth player Steve Moore somehow also handles six-string duties). Song titles like "Spirit Warrior" and "Earthly Powers" amount to a knowing wink from the band. But on their 2009 release, Spirit Animal, it seems like the group has set their sights on Trevor Rabin era Yes (especially on such tunes as the title track). Photographer: Shawn Brackbill.
