Da Brat Biography
Da Brat CD discography In 1992, a Chicago-based teenage spitfire nicknamed Artist (Shawntae Harris) won a rapping contest sponsored by YO! MTV RAPS. Hip-hop impresario Jermaine Dupri caught wind of the new talent and signed her to his label, producing her 1994 debut. The album--a defiant slab of ghetto realism, face-melting loops and samples, and infectious beats--was a huge crossover hit, as were its follow-ups. Artist's aggressive style and refusal to play the coy sex kitten appealed to both genders, yet after that bold start, her career quieted down, and the rapper dabbled in acting, guested on reality TV shows, and made guest appearances on other rappers' albums. Still releasing the occasional single and album, she remains a respected figure in hip-hop.
