While vintage monolithic riffing is the name of the game here, ex-Killswitch Engage singer Jesse David Leach follows in the footsteps of many modern day metal vocalists -- melodic singing alternates with hardcore-esque screaming. The band's sophomore release, WHAT HAVE WE BECOME, resembles its predecessor with its rumbling, crashing rhythm section, the alternation of melodic singing with all-out screaming, and a catalogue of monstrous riffs that coerce the listener into playing along on air guitar. Seemless's sludgy, ominous sound nods to classic Black Sabbath at times, but in conception and execution WHAT HAVE WE BECOME is decidedly contemporary. With their 2005 self-titled debut having earned comparisons to such renowned names as Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, and Kyuss, the Massachusetts quartet Seemless plow through similar territory on their sophomore outing, 2006's What Have We Become. A side project for members of Killswitch Engage and Shadows Fall, Seemless look to the roots of metal and hard rock for their titanic sound. Tracks such as "Cast No Shadow" and "Eyes of a Child" follow this aforementioned formula, while "The Deep Below" takes things down a notch momentarily (bringing to mind when Pantera would do the same thing, check "This Love" from Vulgar Display of Power).
