| Mathias Schaffhauser Ware CDs Unequal Equality CD (2009)
$15.15 A collection of collaborations between Mathias Schaffhäuser, owner of the Ware label, and a variety of other artists -- including a posthumous one, if one chooses to believe the story behind the Jan Jelinek discovery of Ursula Bogner -- Unequal Equality should be more of a striking modern electronic/dance effort than it is. At the album's slickest, on "Confusion (Rules OK)" with Markus Güntner and "My Old Man" with Lucy, the latter's melody a true standout, everything has a lovely if formal flow, while the opening kick on "Marathon," with And.Id, starts another strong track well. But rather than showcasing a variety of individual approaches, most of the songs feel of a piece, and if that's a reasonably attractive and listenable piece, it's not as remarkable as it could be. Still, Unequal Equality feels more like a pleasant curio than anything else, of interest to preexisting fans but unlikely to win over more listeners.

| Rechenzentrum Ware Records Rechenzentrum CD (2000)
$14.29 Though the drum programs and effects are clinical and precise in the hallowed tradition of minimal techno, Rechenzentrum's self-titled debut remains a very warm and engaging record. And though the three-part "Da Hilsbach Triptychon" is heavily processed in the modern musique concrète aesthetic, the programming is downright funky and playful. Similar to electronic recidivists from Stereolab to Appliance to Fridge, Marc Weiser makes sure there's plenty of personality to his productions, and it's clear from the opener "Absent Minded," in which the skeletal beats don't quite overwhelm the gentle synthesizer atmospheres and barely there whisperings from a female vocal.
