When a band's self-professed goal is to "break some hearts and climb some charts," a resulting outpouring of crescendo-prone three chords, split liberally between guitar and keyboards, is nothing shocking. Ditto for unapologetically wailing vocals ruminating on the virtues of loves gained and lost. But CHANGES tosses some surprising idiosyncrasies into the mix--stuttering riffs to break up the formula, genuinely heavy moments in which crashing guitars contrast intriguingly with more sensitive ivory-tinkling--revealing a band more immediately prepared to share new found glory with their influences than toil in wannabe obscurity.
