If there was ever a "tour de force" this is it!
This is an outstanding jazz album. It sizzles, it steams, it rocks, you name it! With some unparalleled performances, it is a record to die for, or, to be more realistic, one of those that youd take to that proverbial deserted island. The combo Oscar Peterson, N H O Pedersen, Louis Hayes is high-powered, inspired and forceful, yet superbly subtle and elegant. The way the trio interacts is nothing short of awesome. You will find the fine tuned ballad, but also the unstoppable big band. If I were to single out one favorite track, it would be "Soft Winds." Although I have heard many recordings of this fine piece, this is the one that stands out. The driving bass and the sophisticated drum work form the perfect backdrop for Peterson, whos at his very best. This is really a breathtaking performance, and you can literally hear how Peterson portrays an entire big band on his piano within his trio framework. One can listen to this performance any number of times, following Peterson, or Hayes, or Pedersen, and does it swing! It just cant be done in a better way. And when you finally reach the end of the piece just listen to that finish!, you feel that you have really had a musical workout. Most likely your pulse is above 100, and youll go "phew"! Perhaps you think that these are big words, but in my opinion no collection of Petersons recordings is complete without this record. This is mastery. It is magic, it is jazz when it transcends the myth of what jazz is supposed to be. Enjoy!

more than just fast playing... GREAT album!
over thiry years ago a kid i worked with at a stereo store in l.a. made me a cassette tape of this album... but i didnt know what album it was, the tape was just labeled oscar peterson. i have listened to this album over and over again since then, loving every bit of it. earlier this year 2006 i burned some mp3s from the cassette so i would have a cd to play in the car... i also put them up on one of my websites and posted in various jazz radio station forums and oscar peterson fan sites, asking for help identifying the album. when it was identified as great connection, i immediately bought a copy. the liner notes were by music critic robert palmer, who said this wasnt one of oscars best albums, like tristeza. my first reaction was if you werent already dead, id kill you for saying that! joke!. based on that comment, i purchased tristeza to see what the critics thought was oscars best. well... heres my quick review of both, including why i think great connection is the better album. tristeza features fantastically fast and precise piano playing, executed almost perfectly. the bass and drums exist only to support oscar... there is minimal interplay, and the sound as recorded is smaller than on great connection. although impressive, the emphasis is on speed and flash, rather than warmth and heart. great connection, though, from the very start features back and forth interplay between the musicians. oscar and nils-henning trade off, each speaking with different voices, playing off each others melodies and riffs, using dynamics both volume and speed. in addition, the recording is more wam and intimate... you can hear every subtlety of the piano, the bass growls, simple but clever hi-hat and snare work, etc. as for precision, great connection is filled with what we musicians call clams... it is far from a perfect album. that said, the mistakes make the performances real, enhancing rather than detracting. it is not just speed for speeds sake. the album is warm, inviting, impressive, and melodic. while you might find yourself whistling something off tristeza, there will be entire sections of great connection you wont be able to get out of your brain. tracks 1, 4, 5 and 7 are especially brilliant. maybe great connection is the oddball oscar album, in that you can hear him play with playing softly and loudly, slowly and quickly, and with other musicians... if so, then i have the only oscar album i need... pure speed wears thin for me, and it is the playfulness, the dynamics, the interplay, and the pure joy of this album... flaws and all... that make it a must have. lastly, how funny that someone else also searched for this album for decades, and also loves track 5... if you dont have this album, get it now...

The best present my husband received!!
OK, my husband has been looking for this recording for 20 years now. Imagine his surprise when he opened the CD for his birthday yesterday! I am so greatful that CD Universe carries such a wide selection of CDs with excellent service. My husband loves "Just Squeeze Me" and is his favorite Oscar Peterson recording of all time. If you love Oscar you will not be disappointed.

Jazz Classic Heaven!!!
It was the 70s when I first heard this album. I remember hearing it boom from the local record shop in Hyde Park, and I knew I had to have it! The lively and precise beat was evidence of what could happen with three musicians who knew their instruments. Perfectly in synch with each other as if they play together all of their lives. I became a Jazz addict from that day on!!
